Tatashe and Shombo are two varieties of dried sweet peppers that form the flavor foundation of Nigerian cuisine. Tatashe (similar to bell peppers) is mild and sweet with bright red color, while Shombo (similar to paprika peppers) is slightly spicier with deeper, earthier notes. Together, they create the distinctive red color and complex sweet-spicy flavor in Jollof Rice, Red Stew, Pepper Soup base, and Fried Rice. These dried peppers are more concentrated and flavorful than fresh peppers, with sugars that have caramelized during the drying process. Can be used whole (rehydrated and blended) or purchased as ground powder for convenience. The powder is essential for authentic Nigerian cooking – it’s not the same as cayenne or generic red pepper flakes. Rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, and capsaicin. Our peppers are sun-dried naturally to preserve color and flavor, then carefully sorted to remove stems and seeds. Blend into pepper base for stews, sprinkle on grilled meat, or use in marinades.
